  • Week 7 Homework – 10/21/21

    1. Read

    1. History of US Chapter 34-37, pgs 148-167.

    2. Book Bomb Part 3, pgs 88-138 (Last week we accidentally added a “1” to the reading assignment and assigned you an extra 100 pages! If you did it all, bravo … you are ahead in your reading. If not, you have time to catch up!)

    3. Speech – Read Franklin D Roosevelt’s speech – The State of the Union Address – 1941 – “Four Freedoms Speech”

    Remember – There’s lots of great ways to take notes. In addition to words and lists, you could consider drawing pictures in the margins to help you think about and remember what your read.

    Listen to the 2-part podcast from American History Tellers called “The WWII Home Font” (about 2 hours total)

    You can find the podcast HERE.

    If you are new to the American History Tellers or podcasts in general, once you are on that page, you will need to search for the title “WWII Home Front” to find the episodes that you need to listen to.

    3. Writing

    Last time, you selected your American hero from World War II to do your presentation and written summary. Your summary will be 3 paragraphs long.

    Your summary and presentation will be both be due November 4.

    This week, your assignment is to take key notes on the sources that you found. Remember to take note of WHICH source your information comes from as you take your key notes.

    Be sure to grab a quote or two as you go so you can add those in as well.

    Bring a printed copy of your notes to turn in. (Remember to type with your name, date, and assignment title.)

    NOTE: We’ll be doing an activity in class with your key notes. You will want to make sure you bring them so you can participate!

    Select an American hero from World War II to do a presentation and written summary. The hero does not have to be well-known. However, you need to be able to find at least three sources about them either online or in print.

    Your summary and presentation will be due November 4.

    This week, your assignment is to find the sources that you will reference and to create a Works Cited page for those references.

    1. Watch this video on what the difference is between a Works Cited page and a Bibliography. Pay particular attention to the formatting instructions.

    2. Research your American WWII hero and find sources that you want to use.

    You need at least THREE sources. One source must be a printed source (book, magazine, etc). Be sure to bookmark any online your sites so you can find them later!

    3. Create a Works Cited page from those sources. (Remember, you DO NOT need to do key notes or paragraphs yet!)

    Use https://www.scribbr.com/mla-citation-generator/ to create your citations. (NOTE: You may have to do additional research to sometimes find the necessary information for websites.)

    When you are done, your paper should look like THIS sample we handed out in class.

    4. Handwrite your name at the top of your Works Cited page so we know it is yours. (Yes, this is one time where you are allowed to!)

    Help finding the publication date of an online sources

    If you have trouble finding the date a webpage was published, this article maybe helpful.

    Last resort, you can use this website to determine the first time a particular page was created.

    Research your assigned dictator.

    Following the format of the Churchill paragraph we reviewed in class:

    1. Write key notes that answer each of the questions. Note that some answers are only words. Others are a few phrases or sentences.

    2. Write 2 paragraphs that summarize your research. Figure out which information you want to include in the first paragraph and which information you want to include in the second paragraph.

    You can include a quote if you want, but it is not required.

    Use proper paper format when turning everything in.

    Show your key notes AND your paragraphs to your writing mentor and then revise.

    Print and bring a copy to class of your notes AND your paragraph to turn in.

    Using the 2 articles about leading and communicating during a crisis you read (see links above): 

    1.  Take key notes on both articles. No more than 1 page of key notes per article! (But it’s definitely okay if your notes fill up less than one page for each article.)

    2. Write a 2-paragraph summary using your key notes. The summary should be a combination of the information from BOTH articles and should flow together. (Do NOT write 1 paragraph for each article.) It’s okay if you use more information from one article than the other.

    3. Include 1 quote in the summary and use MLA intext citation. Your quote should be taken from one of the two articles. (You can include one quote per paragraph, but only one quote for the two paragraphs is required.)

    Show your key notes AND your paragraphs to your writing mentor and then revise.

    Print and bring a copy to class of your notes AND your paragraph to turn in.

    Finish putting your anchor dates figures on your timeline – including new figures that were missing from last week.

    2. The 18th Amendment to the Constitution and the 3 articles on interpreting the 18th Amendment. (These were handed out in class.)

    3. Article – Was Prohibition a Success or a Failure?

    4. Come prepared to discuss the following questions in class:

    • Was Prohibition a success or a failure?
    • Can you legislate morality? 
    • What makes a good law vs a bad law? 
    • Is it okay to break a bad law?

    Due NEXT week. Prepare a presentation on the topic you chose.

    • Must only be 5 minutes long
    • Don’t be boring! Find an interesting way to present your information (quiz game, puppet show, short demonstration, crossword puzzle, act out the story)
    • Practice at home – make sure you can stay within your time limit and your idea works

    5. Writing

    Prepare key notes to go with your presentation.

    Here’s an example of what they can look like. (This example is based on the WWI NY Times article we read in class.)

    • Based on the research you do for your presentation

  • Week 0 – Homework Due Before the First Class

    1. Read Treaties, Trenches, Mud and Blood by Nathan Hale

    This short graphic novel will give you a great overview of World War I, which is the background starting point of our class.

    2. Read this New York Times Article on World War I.

    This short article focuses on what did and did not change following World War I.

    3. Watch these YouTube videos.

    4. Select a cultural topic from the 1920s to do a 5-minute presentation on. 

    CLICK HERE to put your name next to the topic you want to do. 

    You’ll be doing your presentation the second week of class, and you’ll get more information about the presentation in the first week.

    5. Bring the name and email of a Writing Mentor that you will work with throughout the year. 

    Your writing mentor will review your writing and give you feedback. First semester, this will only be a few paragraphs most weeks. Second semester, they will help you work on your multi-page research paper.

    I’ve attached two pages that describe who to look for in a writing mentor and what you (as the scholar) are expected to do in return. Please note that siblings, other mentors at ASA, and parents CAN NOT be your writing mentor.

    (Note: These documents say you will meet weekly with your writing coach. However, in this class you will only meet with them on weeks where you have a writing assignment for them to review.)
