   Ch 38-42, pgs. 182-207

2. President Ronald Reagan’s speech at Moscow University

This speech was given to students in the Soviet Union in 1988. After the speech, the New York Times editorialized that “When people some day look back to the milestones of the cold war, they are likely to remember the day Ronald Reagan extolled freedom, while Lenin looked on.” No one knew when he gave this speech that the Soviet Union would end just three years later.

Please annotate the speech and prepare for a document study.

As you read, focus on the following:

1. Look for literary/rhetorical devices that make the speech more effective.
2. Compare how Ronald Reagan talks about freedom with how Martin Luther King, Jr. did in his speech from a few weeks ago.

Reread pgs 27-29 in your Research Paper curriculum (all about citations).
