  • Week 4 Homework – following 9/28/21

    1. Read

    1. History of US Chapter 19-25, pgs 92-110.

    2. SpeechFDR’s (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) 1st Inaugural Address – Come prepared to do a document study on the speech.

    Using the 2 articles about leading and communicating during a crisis you read (see links above – also handed out in class): 

    1.  Take key notes on both articles. No more than 1 page of key notes per article! (But it’s definitely okay if your notes fill up less than one page for each article.)

    2. Write a 2-paragraph summary using your key notes. The summary should be a combination of the information from BOTH articles and should flow together. (Do NOT write 1 paragraph for each article.) It’s okay if you use more information from one article than the other.

    3. Include 1 quote in the summary and use MLA intext citation. Your quote should be taken from one of the two articles. (You can include one quote per paragraph, but only one quote for the two paragraphs is required.)

    4. Show your key notes AND your paragraphs to your writing mentor and then revise.

    5. Print and bring a copy to class of your notes AND your paragraph to turn in.

    3. Article – Was Prohibition a Success or a Failure?

    4. Come prepared to discuss the following questions in class:

    • Was Prohibition a success or a failure?
    • Can you legislate morality? 
    • What makes a good law vs a bad law? 
    • Is it okay to break a bad law?

    1. Ken Burns Prohibition – Episode 3 (approx. 1 1/2 hours)

    NOTE: There is a short section that is a little “iffy” – even for older students. It specifically discusses how women (and men) became more promiscuous during the 1920s, and there are several images shown which are fairly risquĂ©. Some aspects of sex are also mentioned. If you want to skip this part (or parents want to preview before watching), it is 34:42 to 38:56 of the documentary.

    4. Writing

    1. Read the 3 commentary articles on the 18th amendment (above). Create key notes for all three articles. Bring 1 copy of your keynotes for the 3 articles to class to turn in.
  • Week 1 Homework – 9/7/23

    Minimum = figures who are on the Key Dates list

    Above & Beyond = all the timeline figures

    4. Presentation

    Due this coming week – 9/14. Prepare a presentation on the topic you chose. (Here’s the signup list if you need a reminder.)

    • Must only be 5 minutes long
    • Should show how your topic relates to the 1920s
    • Find an interesting way to present your information. (Not necessarily a game – but engaging — pictures, power point, object, activity, etc)
    • Practice at home – make sure you can stay within your time limit and your idea works

    5. Writing

    Prepare key notes to go with your presentation.

    Here’s an example of what they should look like. (This example is based on the WWI NY Times article we read in class.)

    • Based on the research you do for your presentation
    • One page
    • Includes key information about your topic
    • Include your name, date, and presentation topic at the top

    Bring enough copies to give every person in the class (11 students + 2 teachers)

  • Week 0 – Homework Due Before the First Class (2023)

    1. Read Treaties, Trenches, Mud and Blood by Nathan Hale

    This short graphic novel will give you a great overview of World War I, which is the background starting point of our class.

    2. Consider how WWI impacted Europe and the United States.

    Read this New York Times Article on World War I.

    This short article focuses on what did and did not change following World War I.

    Then watch this video about how WWI shifted the US’s role in the world. WWI: Rise of the United States

    3. Watch these YouTube videos.

    4. Select a cultural topic from the 1920s to do a 5-minute presentation on.

    You’ll be doing your presentation the second week of class, and you’ll get more information about the presentation in the first week.

    5. Bring the name and email of a Writing Mentor that you will work with throughout the year. 

    Your writing mentor will review your writing and give you feedback. First semester, this will only be a few paragraphs most weeks. Second semester, they will help you work on your multi-page research paper.

    Finish preparing your presentation based on your research paper topic.

    You will present to the class on the last day.

    No more than 5 minutes!

    5. Writing Assignment

    Complete one final proofread on your paper. Fix any formatting/grammar/etc.

    Bring your final, completed paper to class to turn in.

  • Week 21 Homework – 4/14/22

    Interview 2 people of different ages and find out where they were when 9/11 happened.

    Use these questions to structure your conversation.

    Come prepared to share the stories you heard with the rest of the class.

    4. Presentation

    Begin working on a presentation based on your research paper topic.

    You will present to the class on the last day.

    Your presentation needs to be informative and include visual aids. (Video/pictures are fine.)

    5. Writing Assignment

    Write a 2-3 page self-reflection essay. Use essay format and answer these questions:

    • What are your takeaways from this class? 
    • What did you learn from what you studied at home and what we did in class? 
    • What did you learn about yourself?

    This paper does NOT need to go to the writing mentor.

  • Week 19 Homework – 3/24/22

    1. History of US – (Book 10)
      Ch 38-42, pgs. 182-207

    2. President Ronald Reagan’s speech at Moscow University

    This speech was given to students in the Soviet Union in 1988. After the speech, the New York Times editorialized that “When people some day look back to the milestones of the cold war, they are likely to remember the day Ronald Reagan extolled freedom, while Lenin looked on.” No one knew when he gave this speech that the Soviet Union would end just three years later.

    Please print the speech and prepare for a document study.

    Here are some of the types of questions/items to look for as you study:

    • Vocabulary words you look up
    • Something you could argue/debate
    • A question that you have
    • An allusion (subtle reference to something else)
    • A connection/application to current day
    • An “I wonder” …
    • Favorite quote or beauty of language
    • Something about agency or freedom

    Reread pgs 27-29 in your Research Paper curriculum (all about citations).
