Ch Ch 55-57, 260-275 - Read & Watch: Amanda Gorman’s Inauguration Poem “The Hill We Climb.” This speech was given at President Biden’s inauguration in Jan 2021.

Finish preparing your presentation based on your research paper topic.
You will present to the class on the last day.
No more than 5 minutes!
Your presentation needs to be informative and include visual aids. (Video/pictures are fine.)
5. Writing Assignment
Complete one final proofread on your paper. Fix any formatting/grammar/etc.
Bring your final, completed paper to class to turn in.

Interview 2 people of different ages and find out where they were when 9/11 happened.
Use these questions to structure your conversation.
Come prepared to share the stories you heard with the rest of the class.

Begin working on a presentation based on your research paper topic.

Week 19 Homework – 3/24/22

2. President Ronald Reagan’s speech at Moscow University
This speech was given to students in the Soviet Union in 1988. After the speech, the New York Times editorialized that “When people some day look back to the milestones of the cold war, they are likely to remember the day Ronald Reagan extolled freedom, while Lenin looked on.” No one knew when he gave this speech that the Soviet Union would end just three years later.

Please print the speech and prepare for a document study.
Here are some of the types of questions/items to look for as you study:
- Vocabulary words you look up
- Something you could argue/debate
- A question that you have
- An allusion (subtle reference to something else)
- A connection/application to current day
- An “I wonder” …
- Favorite quote or beauty of language
- Something about agency or freedom

Movie: On the Basis of Sex
This movie does a great job of portraying a key point in Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s life. She later become the second women to become a member of the Supreme Court. She died in 2020.

History of Women’s Rights and the ERAThe following videos take you through the history of Women’s rights, starting in the middle of the 19th Century up to history that just happened in 2021. We will be doing several activities in class related to this information.
It will take you about 60 minutes to watch all of these videos. There is also a statement to read from 1978 from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regarding the church’s stance ERA. The church reconfirmed their stance in 2019.
Reading Break
Before you watch the rest of the videos, please read the statement by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints from 1978.
Current History
In 1919, bills were introduced in several states to become the 38th state to ratify the ERA. Utah was one of them. The vote in Utah did not pass.
This video is a news report while the bill was being debated.
NOTE: As you watch, notice that several women from Big Ocean speak out against the bill. Big Ocean is a non-profit run by Carolina Allen, an ASA parent. And Grace Garn (also part of Big Ocean) is a former ASA student.

Your first time through will be MESSY. Don’t feel like you have to start at the beginning and write straight through. Use your outline to figure out where you want to start.
You have two weeks to work on this rough draft. We expect you to have at least 6 pages (double spaced) of rough draft material by then.
As you write, don’t forget to make note of where you are pulling your information so that you’ll be able to cite your sources later.

Next week in class, we will be studying the “I Have a Dream” speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Please watch him give his speech while you read the speech. (This version has been colorized, and the sound has been amplified. The original is in black and white.
Then reread and annotate the speech. Find as many of the following (or others!) in the document:
- Vocabulary words you look up
- Something you could argue/debate
- A question that you have
